Lisa Kermish found her best friends and a lifelong commitment to social justice at UC Santa Cruz.
Now she’s added Slug Support to her will.

As a student, Kermish (Stevenson ‘76, literature and creative writing) taught creative writing workshops, created her own major, and demonstrated for causes she believed in, such as divestment from South Africa.

“Many of my closest friends are people I met then,” she says. “My time at UC Santa Cruz gave me great confidence in my abilities and confidence to choose what is important to me.”

She later helped establish the union that represents professional and technical staff for the UC system.

To share the amazing experience she had at UC Santa Cruz with as many people as possible, her planned gift will directly address education affordability. Slug Support provides food assistance and other services for students facing financial crises.

A career public servant, Kermish notes that she is not wealthy.

“I have some money to give and this is how I give it,” she says. “Somebody who is in crisis will know there are resources they can reach out to for help.”
